IN LINE WITH THE MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT'S
SUSTAINABLE FOOD-FISH SELF-SUFFICIENCY (S2F2S) PROGRAMME
Basic System to meet the goal
Working with local universities for the
State-Of-The-Art Technology
To assist the government in addressing food security agenda using green technology Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) to meet present and future food-fish demand in the country.
The future of the aquaculture industry we desire must start by giving the right training to those who want to tackle sustainability issues, improve and strengthen weaknesses, and gain recognition for achieving all the standards and quality demanded by modern society.
The proposed S2F2S Programme with its multi-prone objectives is just a small step towards improving the country’s aquaculture backdrop and the quality of life of those participating and benefiting as aspired in the MALAYSIA MADANI concept.
Let us take these small steps together and hopefully we will soon become brave enough to tackle bigger challenges in aquaculture as we move forward.
Fish has been the main source of protein for Malaysians. Increasing awareness on the health benefits of eating fish has resulted in the per capita fish consumption among Malaysians amounting to 46.9kg per year, the second highest in South-east Asia after Cambodia at 63.2kg per year. The fish consumed mostly came from capture fisheries. Only 22% of the total volume of fish landed in 2022 came from aquaculture. Against the backdrop of 1.1-1.3% annual increase in the population growth rate from 2019-2022 (Dept. of Statistics, Malaysia 2022), and almost 5% annual decline in fish catch from 2016 to 2020 (Dept. of Fisheries, Malaysia, 2022), Malaysia has to rely on aquaculture to meet the increasing demand for fish in the near future. It is not surprising that the government is ambitiously targeting to increase aquaculture production from the present 0.5 million metric tons to 0.9 million metric tons per year by 2030 in order to meet the increasing fish demand. According to the Aquaculture Director, Department of Fisheries, Malaysia (January, 2023) Malaysia needs an additional 20,000 aquaculture producers in order to meet the targeted aquaculture production by 2030. The Department has also identified major issues and challenges confronting the aquaculture industry and came up with a strategic plan for 2021-2030 (Dept. of Fisheries, Malaysia 2022).
